Dr. Nathan G. Everding is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the comprehensive treatment of shoulder, elbow, and hand & wrist conditions. A Central New York native who grew up in Skaneateles, Dr. Everding returned to his home community after extensive training to provide advanced upper extremity care to patients throughout the region.

Education and Training

Dr. Everding’s journey in medicine began with undergraduate studies in Providence, Rhode Island, followed by medical school in the Bronx. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Committed to developing expertise in upper extremity surgery, Dr. Everding pursued two competitive fellowships: Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This additional specialized training uniquely positions him to treat the full spectrum of upper extremity disorders in patients of all ages.

Areas of Expertise

As an upper extremity surgeon, Dr. Everding treats a diverse patient population ranging from children to elderly adults, including laborers, athletes, and musicians. His clinical focus encompasses broken bones, torn tendons, arthritis, inflammatory conditions, nerve compression syndromes, rotator cuff disorders, and congenital abnormalities. He has particular expertise in shoulder and elbow joint replacement surgery, a rapidly advancing field that has expanded treatment options for patients who previously had limited alternatives.

Dr. Everding maintains a special interest in treating upper extremity arthritis. While many people are familiar with hip and knee replacements, arthritis also affects the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. He is experienced in the full range of treatments for these conditions, including advanced joint replacement procedures. Shoulder replacement surgery, in particular, has seen significant advancements over the past decade, allowing surgeons to address not only arthritis but also complex fractures, dislocations, and severe rotator cuff tears.

Treatment Philosophy

Dr. Everding’s approach to patient care centers on individualized treatment. He recognizes that while diagnoses may be similar between patients, each person’s lifestyle, age, and activity level plays a crucial role in determining the most appropriate treatment path. His philosophy emphasizes patient education and shared decision-making.

He believes in providing patients with comprehensive information about their diagnosis, all available treatment options, and realistic expectations for outcomes. Rather than dictating a treatment plan, Dr. Everding guides patients through the decision-making process, empowering them to choose the approach that best aligns with their personal goals and circumstances.

Why Orthopedics

Dr. Everding is drawn to orthopedics because it focuses on improving quality of life rather than treating life-threatening illness. His patients are often not “sick” in the traditional sense but are experiencing pain and functional limitations that affect their daily activities and overall well-being.

Whether helping someone return to work, resume athletic activities, or simply regain independence in everyday tasks, Dr. Everding finds deep satisfaction in restoring function and relieving pain. The field allows him to take patients who are struggling with decreased mobility or chronic discomfort and help them return to a fuller, more active life.

Practice and Community

Dr. Everding practices with Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists, a comprehensive orthopedic group that brings together experts across all orthopedic subspecialties. This collaborative model ensures that patients receive specialized, expert-level care tailored to their specific needs. As medicine has evolved toward greater specialization, this approach allows each surgeon to maintain deep expertise in their focus area while providing patients access to comprehensive orthopedic services.

A father of three young children, Dr. Everding understands the importance of family time and work-life balance. Outside of his surgical practice, he enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including skiing, soccer, and other sports. He is committed to raising his family in Central New York and providing advanced upper extremity orthopedic care to his community for years to come.
